Tony J. Rhodes, 61, of Gas City, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Marion Health in Marion, Indiana.
Tony was a dedicated welder for over 49 years, proudly graduating from Marion High School's Class of 1983 and attending Hobart Welding Academy, where he received his certification in 1986. Known for his great sense of humor and quick wit, Tony brought joy to those around him, especially his grandchildren, who were the true lights of his life. He always placed them above all else.
In addition to welding, Tony had a variety of interests that kept him active and engaged. An avid card player and karaoke enthusiast, he was also the former owner of Kick-in-the-Tunes. His favorite musicians included Johnny Cash and Flynnville Train. He enjoyed playing pool and participated in several bowling tournaments for the Bowlers of America, where he was a dedicated fan of professional bowler Ronnie Russell.
Tony had a passion for classic cars and was a devoted Jeff Gordon fan. He also served as a crew chief for the Hal Canode Alcohol Dragster Crew, a role in which he celebrated three championships in the dragster series. Proud of his culinary skills, he often humorously referred to himself as "Tony Crocker." A big follower of Peyton Manning, his admiration extended beyond the Indianapolis Colts.
Tony was born on June 19, 1963, in Marion, IN, to James and Phyllis Rhodes.
Tony is survived by his children: Brandi (Joe) Sollars of Marion, IN; Andrew
(Chelsea) Rhodes of Kimberly, AL; and Blake Rhodes of Daytona Beach, FL. He cherished his grandchildren: Keara (Jalen) Montoya, Mersadez Sollars, Kyandra, Lili, Olivia, Ainsleigh, and Jaxon Rhodes, Justin (Madeline) Sollars, Kerrigan (Isaac) Armes, Kayla (Shantel) Short, along with his great-grandchildren: River, Kaya, Brynlee, and Charlie.
He is also survived by his father James (Cheryle) Rhodes, Marion, IN. His siblings: Jimmy Rhodes, Khristine (Tony) Rector, Wesley Rhodes, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Tony's legacy continues through his former companion, Kimber Roberts, her children: Collin Hampton, Camryn Hampton, Channing Turner, and her grandchildren Tanner, Kevin, Kegan, Serenity, and Ariel. He will be fondly remembered by his lifelong best friend, Beth Southerland, and beloved pet, Princess Onyx.
Tony was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis (Castillo) Rhodes; brother, Phillip; niece, Sharlene Rhodes; and grandparents, David and Bessie Castillo.
A life celebration will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Jonesboro Community Center 835 Corder St, Jonesboro, IN 46938. Flowers and gifts may be delivered there any time after 1:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Post 10, located at 1700 S. Pennsylvania St., Marion, IN 46953.
