Terry J. Underwood, 72, passed away unexpectedly and too soon on Thursday morning, November 5, 2020. He was born on April 24, 1948 to Barbara (Winans) and Gerrald Underwood in Marion, Indiana. He leaves behind his wife, Vicki (Richards), two daughters, Tisha Southwood, Linden, and Tara Underwood, Marion; granddaughter Katlyn (Adam) Montana, New York; granddaughter Lucia Southwood, Linden; granddaughter Scarlet; a grandson Toby, Marion; and a great-grandson Michael Montana, brother Mike Underwood and sister-in-law Jane Underwood both of Fairmount. Other deceased family include his parents; a brother Jim Underwood, and sister-in-law, Elaine Underwood. He also was uncle to several beloved nieces and nephews. He was a 1966 graduate of Fairmount High School. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the US Army in 1967 and in 1968. Terry was injured in a convoy attack and served time in Japan hospitals and took his R and R in Sydney, Australia. A love of farming was passed down from his grandpa Nolder Underwood. Upon leaving the Army, he farmed and worked at the family business, Underwood and Sons Meat Market. He retired from over 50 years of farming last year. He married his junior high and high school sweetheart on Christmas Day, 1969. The attended their first Christmas dance in 1961 at the Old Academy in Fairmount. She was 12 and he was 13. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. A totally family-oriented husband and father, he raised his two daughters on the same country block that he hunted, camped, and fished on as a child. He enjoyed gardening, and was respectful of wildlife and nature. He was an avid reader of history. Through the years, Terry never failed to help a friend or neighbor in need. He will be remembered for his generous heart and compassion toward others. He had a mantra he often shared with his family: "everyone thinks differently". It was this open-minded outlook on life that made him a beloved friend and mentor to younger generations. Arrangements have been entrusted the the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana. Memorial and graveside services will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) or the American Red Cross.
