Shirley Joan Cowgill

Shirley J. (Grose) Cowgill, 85, of Upland, Indiana, passed away on January 21, 2023, surrounded by family, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. She was born August 8, 1937, to Leroy and Mary Grose. She was a 1955 graduate of Marion High School. Shirley was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother; her family meant everything to her. She was also an avid and hardworking woman. She retired from Owens-Illinois Glass Company in 1982. She went on working at Ivanhoe’s Restaurant well into her seventies, where she made the best chicken salad.

Shirley is survived by her four children, Tony Cowgill, Hartford City, Teresa “Terri” (Frank) Hall, Hartford City, Troy (Michele) Cowgill, Haslett, Michigan, and Todd Cowgill, Upland. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren; Maggie (Trent) Shaw, T.J. Cowgill, Shane (Barbara) Cowgill, Jacquelyn (Eric) Spenny, Krystin Cowgill, Lauren (Barry) Gastineau, Tyler Hall, Kendal Cowgill, Kody (Abby) Cowgill, and Kaylee Kierstead; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Harry (Misty) Grose and Ronnie Grose; and sisters-in-law, Michael Grose and Sandy Cowgill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Hawkins, and brother, Benny Grose.

Arrangements for Shirley have been entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 259 North Main Street, Upland, Indiana 46989. In accordance with Shirley’s wishes, no immediate services will be held and cremation will take place. Family will celebrate and rejoice in Shirley’s life at a later date with a celebration of life.
