Richard E. Miller

August 22, 1938 — April 9, 2024

Surrounded by his family, Richard E. Miller, 85, of Fairmount, passed from this earthly life on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Century Villa Health Care and Rehabilitation in Greentown.

Known to some as "R.E." and to others as "Dick", he was born in Marion, Indiana on August 22, 1938, the second son of the late Carl and Dorothy (Davis) Miller. He was a 1956 graduate of Marion High School and attended International Business College in Fort Wayne. Dick worked as an engineering technician at RCA, later Thomson Consumer Electronics, for 43 years before retiring in 2000. He proudly served his country in the 1/238th Cavalry Division of the Indiana National Guard where he retired as Master Sergeant after 27 years. In his retirement years, Dick was a valued employee of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home serving in a variety of capacities to ease the burden of grieving families.

Dick was a devoted and active resident of the Fairmount community. He was a member of Fairmount Friends Church where he served on the various committees. For many years, he sang tenor as part of the Marion Easter Pageant chorus. He was a member of the Fairmount Lions Club and in 2012, Dick received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lions International Foundation "for dedicated humanitarian services". If he wasn't doing lawn maintenance for the club, he was serving pancakes or popcorn at various local events and fundraisers. He was also a member of the Fairmount Masonic Lodge #635, the Valley of Fort Wayne Scottish Rite - 32* Freemasons, and the Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne.

As an avid sports enthusiast, Dick enjoyed everything from high school athletics to sprint car racing. Because he loved high school sports so much, he became an IHSAA Football and Basketball Official, which included officiating four State Football Championships. If he wasn't on the court or on the field, he could be found cheering on and supporting Argyll Athletics long after his kids graduated. Dick led by example and taught his children and grandchildren the value of hard work and the benefits of loyalty, humility and good stewardship. To him, there was nothing wrong with leaving something or someone better than they were found.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Dick is survived by his wife, Nancy, whom he married on July 2, 1971. In addition, he is survived by his children, Beth Fitzjarrald, Fairmount, Connie (Bill) Thrasher, Muncie, Dianne (Trey) Loftin, Mobile, AL, Keith (Susan) Miller, Kevin (Tammy) Miller, and daughter-in-law, Janet Liston, all of Fairmount. His grandchildren include Megan (Nathan) Follis, Kelsey (fiancee' Chris Sadler) Fitzjarrald, Bryce and Brenna Miller, Katie, Emma, and Laura Loftin; a sister, Clara Frye of Warsaw and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Dick was also preceded in death by his brother Edward and son, J.D. Liston.
