Rev. Rex G. Hughes, 94, formerly of Jonesboro, Indiana went home to be with his Lord Monday April 9, 2018 at Colonial Oaks Healthcare Center, Marion, Indiana Rex was born November 1, 1923 in Huntington, Indiana to the late John F. and Pearl Mae (Gamble) Hughes. He graduated from Roanoke High School, Huntington County in 1941. He joined the Army in January 1943, served as a medic in the 38th Field Hospital and was honorably discharged in January 1946. While in the Army, he received the Bronze Star, Presidential Citation, and Pacific Medal with 3 stars. In the 1950s, he worked at Fruehauf Trailer Company, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and lived in Huntington. He and his family moved to Jonesboro in 1958. Rex was ordained into the ministry over 60 years ago, in 1960, and served faithfully as one of the assistant pastors at Country Community Church, Jonesboro, Indiana. He retired after 26 years from the Northern Indiana VA Medical Center Marion, Indiana where he was a nursing assistant for over 20 years, and then served in the maintenance department as a locksmith before retiring. After his retirement from the V.A., he opened his own business, and was the owner of Rexs Locksmith and Saw Sharpening, until he retired from that in 2010 at the age of 87. He was a member of the Country Community Church, Jonesboro, Indiana, Jonesboro American Legion Post #95, VFW, Past President of the 38th Field Hospital Army Reunion Association and the National Locksmith Association. Rex first married Faye Belle Craig August 20, 1943. Faye died December 12, 2010. Rex married Betty A. Pattison Behr March 21, 1981 and she preceded him in death December 14, 2014. Rex is survived by his children; Michael (Janice) Hughes, Upland, IN, Nancy D (Shawn) Chen, Huntington, IN, David C. Hughes, Zephyrhills, FL. Brenda E. (Ward) Lewis, Ft. Wayne, IN, Randall L. Hughes, Marion, IN, step-daughter; Carol A. (Bob) King, Upland, IN, and step-son; Gordon R. Hawkinson, Marion, IN. There are 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by brothers, V.T., Jack, and Bob Hughes, sisters Anna McHenry and Jean Lockwood, and step-children; Larry, Jerry, and Terry Behr and Jacqueline Smith. A celebration of Rexs homegoing will be Saturday April 14, 2018 at 3:00 PM at the Country Community Church, 1647 E. 600 S. Jonesboro, Indiana 46938 with Rev. Joy Cardwell officiating. Interment will be at Park Cemetery, Fairmount, IN. The family will receive friends on Friday April 13, 2018 from 4-8 PM at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, College Park Chapel, 4601 S. Western Ave. Marion, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Country Community Church in care of the funeral home.
