Raymond Ray Daugherty, Jr., 79, passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, December 20. He was born inOwingsville, Kentucky, on August 14, 1939, to the late Raymond and Sarah (Daily) Daugherty. He was a 1959 graduate ofSharpsburgHigh School. He married Wanda Sue (Shotts) Daugherty on March 31, 1972. She preceded him in death last December after 45 years of marriage. He left Kentucky in 1959, as he truly despised cutting and stripping tobacco, deciding instead to find work in Marions factories. He quickly found work and held positions as a welder, maintenance supervisor, and machine operator. He retired in 2002 from Marion Community Schools after several decades as a diesel mechanic. He is best known for his terrific storytelling abilities, yarns from growing up in Kentucky with his beloved sisters, and later about his friends who never seemed too far from trouble. He was an avid hunter whose hobbies also included woodworking, knife collecting, the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, the New England Patriots, Clint Eastwood movies, and musicians Bob Dylan, Elvis, and all of the members of the Highwaymen. Ray was a true craftsman. He built enough porch swings, gliders, cedar chests, toy boxes, and gun cabinets, and crocheted enough afghans that if you dont have one of these items, you probably know someone in Grant County who does. He is survived by his daughter, Gina Daugherty (Ray Webber), Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter Stephanie Pratt, Lexington, Kentucky, and son Elgin Louie Daugherty, Lexington, Kentucky; dear sisters AdaYeakle(Don), Jonesboro, Indiana, and Wanda Murdock (Jim),Kokomo, Indiana.
