Phyllis Joann Gross

Phyllis "Joann" Gross of Upland, IN, a beloved wife, and cherished member of her community, passed away on August 3, 2024, at the age of 89. She was born on April 13, 1935 to Robert and Martha Norris in Richmond, Indiana. She married William Gross on April 17, 1960, and he survives.


Joann graduated from Richmond High School in 1953. She was a bookkeeper for her husbands business, National Pipeline in Florida until they moved to Upland in 1978. She then worked at Matthews Feed and Grain, Merkers Pharmacy in Gas City and Wal-Mart in Marion before retiring in 2000. Joann had a profound love for birds and all stray animals, finding joy in the simplest of nature's creatures. She was known for her skillful crochet work, creating beautiful pieces with care and precision. The sound of her grandchildren's laughter at their sporting events brought immense happiness to her heart. She found solace in watching HGTV and spending time in her favorite places, particularly during her ten years in Florida.


Throughout her life, Joann exhibited a remarkable memory and had an amazing mind, always remembering even the tiniest of details. Her compassion and kindness touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Joann will be dearly missed but forever remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for those around her. May she rest in peace, knowing the profound impact she had on all who knew her.


Joann is survived by her husband, children Walt (Karen) Ryan, William A. Gross, and Vanessa Garcia; grandchildren Michelle, James, Josh, Sarah, Drew, Maiah, Joseph, Beau, and Jake; 21 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Danna Gross, nieces and nephews Kim (Daniel) Wall, Liz (Duane) Johnson, and Jimmy (Danielle) Gross. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Vicki Sowders, grandson Michael, brother Bobby Norris, and Brother-in-law James Gross.


Arrangements have been entrusted to Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services Jones-Smith Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday August 8, 2024 9:30 AM-11:30 at Center Chapel Church 8733 E 200 S, Marion, Indiana 46953 where a funeral will follow at 11:30 with Mark Sanders presiding. Burial will follow at Marion National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grant County Humane Society at 505 South Miller Avenue Marion, Indiana 46953 in Joann's honor.
