Phyllis A. Olynger

September 16, 1924 — September 9, 2019

Phyllis A. (Drischel) Olynger, 94, died Monday morning, September 9, 2019, in her Gas City residence, just a week before her 95th birthday. She was born on September 16, 1924 in Marion, the daughter of the late Edward and Ethel (Wise) Drischel. A lifelong resident of Grant County, she graduated from Jefferson Township High School, Upland. She married H. Albert Olynger on December 23, 1943, in Gas City. Together they shared 63 years, before he preceded her in death on October 17, 2007. Phyllis was an amazing person and a wonderful role model. At age 45, and since her boys were grown, she decided to go to college to become a teacher. In 1973, she earned her Bachelors Degree from Marion College (IWU), then went on to get her Masters Degree from Ball State University by attending night classes. She taught first grade in the Mississinewa School System from 1974 until her retirement in 1987. Her first year was at Westview and the remainder of her time was spent at East School. She helped form countless lives with her kindness and teaching skills and to this day still has many of the gifts her students gave her throughout the years. Mrs. Olynger attended Grace Community Church, Marion. She enjoyed gardening all of her life, and liked to keep active well into her nineties. She also enjoyed reading, putting together picture puzzles, doing word search puzzles, staying current on world events and national politics, watching old Westerns, spending time with family, and, in the distant past, getting together with her neighborhood club. Survivors include her three sons: Sol (Ellen) Olynger, Orange, California; Henry (Patti Edwards) Olynger, Gas City; and Gary (Lynn Haynes-Smith) Olynger, Gas City; grandchildren: Laura (Dean) Randell, Phoenix, Arizona; Ben (Amanda) Olynger, Gas City; and Gus Olynger, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; three great grandchildren: Nathan and Jack Randell and Cooper Olynger; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Francis and Ivan Drischel; and sister, Dorothy Long. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home Cremation Services, 259 N. Main St. Upland, Indiana 46989, where a visitation will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 11am-1pm. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm, with Rev. Tom Mansbarger officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Cemetery, Upland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jefferson Cemetery Association, P.O.
