Paul D. Steward, 90, passed away at Colonial Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center in Marion, Indiana, on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Paul was born at home in Chelsea, South Dakota, on November 27, 1931, to the late Douglas and Althia Steward. He graduated from Northville High School in 1949, attended Wessington Springs Junior College, and then graduated from Seattle Pacific College in 1955. It was at college in Seattle that he met the love of his life, Lois H. Hodson. They were married on August 30, 1955. After the wedding, the couple pastored a small Wesleyan Church in Mission, South Dakota. While there, Paul was ordained and he and Lois were accepted as missionaries with World Gospel Mission of Marion, Indiana. After faithfully serving in Bolivia, South America, they retired in Upland, Indiana, in 1996. They moved to Colonial Oaks Retirement Center in Marion in August of 2016, where Lois passed away on January 29, 2018. Paul's love for the Lord, his servant heart, and his willingness to do whatever needed to be done influenced many lives, both on the Field and in retirement. Paul attributed his resourcefulness and ability to make do with what was available to his growing up on the family farm in South Dakota. He was known to say things like, "Tell me what you need and I'll tell you how to get along without it!" Paul's walk with the Lord began when he was a young boy. His life verse was 1st Corinthians 4:2 which says, "Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful" (KJV ). His life exemplified that faithfulness.
Paul will be sadly missed by his daughters, Sandra (LeRoy) Anderson, Peoria, AZ, and Susan (James) Smith, Fairborn, OH; grandchildren, Jonathan (Megan) Anderson, Gallatin, TN, Rebecca Anderson, Peoria, AZ, Kayla (Stephen) Rush, Dublin, Ireland, and Kyle (Erin) Smith, Fort Wayne, IN; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Emma, and Evelyn Anderson, Gallatin, TN; brothers, Donald (Mildred) Steward, Lorin Steward, and Orville (Bonnie) Steward, all of South Dakota; and many other relatives, friends, and life-long supporters, too numerous to mention.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; parents, Douglas and Althia; and sister, Ellen Palmer.
