The world lost a beautiful angel when Mescal Rose (Powell) Weigand, 64, passed away on Sunday evening, December 10th, 2023 at Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne, IN. Born on October 22nd,1959 to the late Henry F. and Mescal R. Powell, Rose was the kindest, most wonderful, selfless wife and mother.
After graduating from Madison-Grant High School in Fairmount, IN in 1978, she went on to work as a deli clerk and baker at Kroger in Marion, IN. Soon after the store closed in 1982, she got hired as an Assistant Deli Manager at Owens County Market, located in the same building. It was there that she met her soon-to-be loving husband Richard 'Tony' Weigand who bought her a piece of cherry pie and won over her heart.
Married on April 30th, 1983, Tony and Rose lived in Marion, IN until Sept. 3rd, 1985, when they moved to Fairmount, IN, the place they would call their home and reside ever since. She gave birth to two children Richard Anthony Weigand (Mar. 2nd, 1987) and Mescal Rosella Weigand (Sept. 1st, 1990).
Throughout her life, she achieved many other wonderful things. She earned rewards playing flute in her high school's concert and marching bands, received her pilot's license after graduating high school, served as a member on the book committee to help write and piece together "Area History of Fairmount, Indiana," released in 1997, and was an active volunteer in the classrooms at Park Elementary School for several years. She would later get hired on as a cafeteria lady at Madison-Grant High School and eventually moved up to becoming the Cafeteria Manager in 2002, proudly serving the students and faculty their meals until May of 2008.
Following her career in food service, she took on the role once again as a stay-at-home mother, a role of which she was incredibly proud to be. Always a loyal supporter and champion of her children's artistic ambitions, she began helping them even more with their projects and inspired their creativity every step of the way. She starred and was featured in numerous Weigand Films shorts, often playing multiple characters, along with her kids Anthony and Rosie and appeared on the short-run HITRECORD ON TV series on Pivot in the episode appropriately titled "RE: Your Mom."
Rose loved starting her day with fresh cups of coffee with her husband Tony. They often took trips to Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing + Casino in Anderson, IN to play the slot machines and enjoyed sharing their special date nights together. And he always made sure his Rose had a rose for Valentine's Day every year.
Rose also enjoyed playing 80's music, taking long walks in the park, hosting dance fests in the living room, attending concerts, playing online games on her Amazon Fire (Fishdom was her favorite), eating Saturday morning oven cookies, cooking family dinners with her daughter, sewing special gifts for her son, decorating cakes for her husband and children's birthdays and other special occasions, going out to eat and going to the movies as a family, watching "I Love Lucy, "The Andy Griffith Show," and "Bewitched" re-runs and the "Curious George" animated series, and meeting her favorite stars at comic/horror conventions. But most of all, she loved caring for and spending quality time with all of her and her family's cats. They meant everything to her and were often times the brightest spots of her day.
She loved collecting clowns, tea pots, Betty Boop merchandise, purses, "Trolls" movie toys, Mickey Mouse memorabilia, anything of SpongeBob, Disney/Pixar movies, snowmen, anything and everything cat-related (especially black cats) and Christmas penguin plushes (her two favorites being Waddles and his best friend Pengui).
Rose was the strongest, most dedicated, hardest-working, inspiring, caring individual with a heart of gold and the biggest, most sparkling smile that could always brighten your day. Even after being diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure in 2013, she didn't let it keep her down. Rose became a star patient at MGH by maintaining a low sodium diet and exercising regularly every single day. Attending Cardiac Rehab at MGH nearly every week kept her going; she loved the members of her group dearly. They shared many great conversations, laughs, and had a lot of fun parties together. We know they kept her spirits high and her heart pumping.
Survivors include her dear husband of 40+ years, Tony (Fairmount, IN) and her two kids Anthony and Rosie (both Fairmount, IN), her step-sons Brian (Kian Cleefman) Weigand (Kokomo, IN) and Andy Weigand (Bonita Springs, FL), her brother Patrick (Vicki) Powell (Fairmount, IN), her sister Jill (Allen) Holloway (La Conner, WA), her grandkids Alijah and Ashton Weigand; her brother-in-law James (Carol) Weigand (Fairmount, IN), her sister-in-law Becky (Greg) Salatin (Anderson, IN), her nieces, nephews, cousins, and her adoring fur babies Orion, Sugar, Cocoa Bean, Benedict, Pepper, and many other precious kitty cats.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry F. and Mescal R., her brother Chris Powell, and her two loving cats Bale and Gizmo.
