Mabel D. Newlin

Mabel Newlin, 87, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, entered her Heavenly home. Born in the union of Charley and Dorothy Landess, she was one of ten children. She graduated from Governor I.P. Gray High School in Portland, Indiana, class of 1954. She married Charles Newlin on August 29, 1954. They were married almost 55 years, when Charles's work on this earth was done and God called him home. Together they were blessed with four children. Mabel worked at RCA in Marion for 25 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of Epworth UMC in Matthews, Indiana for many years. Mabel didn’t need a reason to have everyone over. She found joy in being around her family, cooking and baking for them, making ice cream together, and just making sure they were all well-fed. She made the best chicken and noodles and was baking cookies up until the end. She had a generous heart and would give anyone anything they needed if she was able. Her children all count themselves blessed to have had her as a mother.

Mabel is survived by her children, Deborah (Robert) Grove, Albany, Sharon (Brian) Glass, Gaston, Douglas (Toni) Newlin, Upland, and Pamela (Tod) Phipps, Muncie; grandchildren, Lisa Taylor, Matthew Calvert, Jacob (Leslie) Newlin, Tiffany (Charles) Atkinson, Jennifer (Keith) Karnafel, and Amy Hill; step-grandchildren, Jason (Renee) and Jeremiah (Erjia) Glass; great-grandchildren, Khamarion, Khyree, Elaine "Lainey", Emmett, Jace, Nathan, Ethan, and Jailyn; step-great-grandchildren, Simon, Molly, and Celine; brothers, Glen and Kenneth Landess; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family also would like to give a special thanks to Mabel’s visiting nurses, Emily and Ashly, who gave her such great care.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charley and Dorothy; husband, Charles; grandson, Christopher Grove; son-in-law, Terry Calvert; and siblings, Lawrence Grissom, Harry Landess, Ida May Riegel, Leo Landess, Ruth Elen Landess, Mary Helen Sandefur, and Elizabeth Landess. "Someday we will all meet with our Heavenly Father."

Arrangements for Mabel have been entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral and Cremation Services, 259 North Main Street, Upland, where a visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Steven Sandefur officiating. Burial will take place at Matthews Cemetery.
