Lionel Ussery, 88, Swayzee, Indiana, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2023. He was born in Whitley County, Indiana, on March 9, 1935, to the late Lucile Helen (Boze) Ussery and Lloyd Ussery, Sr. He married Charlene Sue Warner on August 12, 1962, at Zion Lutheran Church in North Manchester, Indiana. He was a graduate of Manchester High School, attended Tri-State (Trine) University and Manchester College. He thoroughly enjoyed history, cars and airplanes, as well as flying privately, as he was a licensed private and commercial pilot with his instrument rating. Mostly, he loved flying his family on their many trips and vacations. He also enjoyed antique cars, like his 1955 MG-TF, which he had restored. He retired from General Motors - Marion (machine shop) in 2000, after 39 1/2 years. He was active in the UAW Local 977 Retirees, having served as the Financial Secretary. He was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church, North Manchester; St. John Lutheran Church, Marion; Grace Lutheran Church, Gas City.
Additionally, he was a member of CPC Sympathy Club and the American Legion, having served in the Armed Forces in Germany and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) for flying. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Sue, of 60 years; his two daughters, Melissa Buesching and Amanda (Frank) Whittle; and two grandsons, Seth and Elijah Whittle.
According to his wishes, there will be no calling or services. Condolences may be shared at the College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home & Cremation Services, www.armeshuntfuneralhome.com. Private services will be held later at the Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Indiana campus of the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System following cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stillwater Hospice at donations@stillwater-hospice.org, or to the donor's choice.
