Karen Kay Stout, 81, of Converse, Indiana passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Creasy Springs Health Center in Lafayette, Indiana.
She was born May 7, 1942 to the late William and Juanita (Powell) Morton. Karen was a graduate of Eastern High School in 1960, Ball State University in 1964 and returned to pursue Education and Master’s Degrees at Marion College in the 1970’s.
She met her future husband during an escapade with a horse trailer and a Palomino horse, and on May 29, 1965, she married John Marvin Stout, who survives. They celebrated 58 years of devoted marriage this past May.
After an early career as a medical technologist at Wabash County Hospital and Marion General Hospital, she obtained her Master’s Degree in Education. She taught middle and high school Science at Eastern Middle/High School in Greentown for over 20 years until she retired. She had a special place in her heart for kids experiencing learning challenges, and especially enjoyed her collaboration with a home economics teacher to develop and teach a food science class.
Karen enjoyed travel to sites of historic interest and natural wonder. She planned epic yearly summer vacations for her family in their trusty motorhome. She was also a fierce competitor as a breeder, trainer, and exhibitor of the American Kennel Club-registered Brittanys. Karen and Marvin traveled the midwest and southern states with their bird dogs and gaited horses in both conformation show, horseback field trial competitions, and produced multiple dual champions.Their crowning achievement of 40 years of breeding Brittanys was winning both the Gun Dog Classic and Best of Breed at the National Specialty Show with DC Country Road's Rough Rider "Cooper" in 2009.
Karen was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Marion, Indiana. In addition to her husband Marvin, she is survived by three daughters, Jennifer (Chris) Lilly, Columbia City, Indiana, Julianne Stout, West Lafayette, Indiana, Jessica (Dave) Fitch, Noblesville, Indiana; four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
She is preceded in death by her parents William and Juanita Morton and her sister, Joyce Ann Hammond.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 4601 S. Western Avenue, Marion, IN 46953. A visitation will be held at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 2015 County Rd 300 W, Marion, IN 46952, Saturday August 5, 2023 from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.. A memorial service will take place immediately following the visitation at 1:00 P.M. with LaMar Imes officiating. A burial will take place at Mississinewa Cemetery following the service.
