Judith "Judy" E. Solms

September 28, 1937 — February 2, 2022

Judith E. Solms, 84, Fairmount, died Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Wyndmoor of Marion. Judy was born on September 28, 1937, in Portland, Indiana, daughter of the late Frank E. and Kathryn V. (Mirgon) Wehrly. She graduated from Marion High School in 1955 and loved attending class reunions and keeping in touch with classmates. She was a farm wife and helped on the farm hauling grain. When her children were young she was taught how to drive a school bus. She was the first woman bus driver for Mississinewa School System. She retired from driving after 26 years on January 16, 1995, most of those years driving bus #9. She became a self-employed title searcher and did that for 17 years between her morning and afternoon bus routes. While being a title searcher she learned the ins and outs of the recorder's office and wanted to use that knowledge to serve Grant County in that capacity. In 1995, she went to work at the Grant County Treasures office to further learn about county service and politics. Judy was elected as Grant County Recorder for two terms serving from 1998-2005. She loved politics and serving Grant County. She was a member of the Indiana Recorders Association where she served as district vice-president, the American Business Women, where she served as vice-president and treasurer, and was the 2003 woman of the year. She was also a member of the Aurae Amaci Chapter of the Grant County Republican Woman and was honored as their 1998 Woman of the Year. Judy also served as a precinct committeewoman for 12 years. After her retirement in 2005, she jumped back into politics again and served on the Fairmount Town Council. Judy was a great cook and noodle maker. She was known as the noodle lady selling numerous bags of noodles. When living on the farm, she planted a huge garden that produced lots of vegetables for canning that the whole family joined in on. She was a member of many euchre clubs throughout the years, loved to read, and never gave up on her beloved Chicago Cubs. Judy was a member of Fairmount Wesleyan Church and a former member of Westview Wesleyan as well as a former member of the Smile Seekers Clown Ministry where she was known as Fredetta. Her clown name "Fredetta" came from her beloved Aunt. Judy was an awesome Mom, loved dearly by her children. She loved the Lord and faithfully prayed for her children and grandchildren. Nothing brought a smile to her face more than an announcement of another great-grandbaby. Judy is survived by five children, Joe (Bobbie) Solms, Kathi Solms, Michael (Mary Jane) Solms, and Stefanie (Rusty Whitton) all of Fairmount and Danny (Layla) Solms of Huntington; 11 grandchildren, Aaron (Shelley) Solms, Jeff (Karie) Solms, David (Katy) Haisley, Sarah (Brandon) Conner, Eric (Mikaela Zambos) Solms, Colin Solms, Tyler Ratliff, Birdie Ratliff, Zoie Ratliff, Jacob (Abby Boone) Solms and Chloe Solms; eight great-grandchildren, Brant, Brody, and Cole Solms, Lillie and Lila Solms, Cadence and Landyn Haisley, and Harper Conner; brother, Frank (Bonnie) Wehrly, Muncie; numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
