John W. Shinn 91, passed away on December 27, 2023 at Colonial Oaks Healthcare in Marion. A pillar of our community, John was a devoted husband, a loving father, a doting grandfather, and great-grandfather who touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. John was born on August 28, 1932, in Sweetser, Indiana to Frederick and Marguerite (White) Shinn. He graduated from Swayzee High School and married Carolyn Richey who preceded him in death in 2018.


John was a husband, father, and grandfather with the utmost passion and devotion. His unwavering commitment to his loved ones made him an exceptional role model, always guiding them with love, compassion, and wisdom. His grandchildren were a constant source of joy, and he created cherished memories that will endure for generations to come. Farming held a special place in John's heart. He instilled within his loved ones a deep appreciation for the land, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations. He loved Swayzee Community Church where he faithfully attended.


John is survived by two daughters, Carol Elaine (Steve) Berry, and Nancy Jo Anderson; son-in-law, Mark (Diane) Stanley; nine grandchildren, Jay (Angela) Berry, Amy (Jason) Metzger, Stephanie Sherrill, Brittney (Colin) Bell, Brian Anderson, Sarah (Jeremy) Day, John Robert (Kayla) Stanley, Amy (Chris)Greenwell, and Ben (Erin) Gettinger; twelve great-grandchildren,Gia Berry, Madison Metzger, Braelynn Metzger, McKinleigh Sherrill, Zoey Sherrill, William Bell, Mary Colin Bell, John Wyatt Bell, Hadley Stanley, Olivia Stanley, Evan Greenwell, Andrew Greenwell, Jack Gettinger, and Emily Gettinger; brother William (Carolee) Shinn, Robert Shinn; sister Jane Shinn and Tim Mock; sister-in-law Catherine Richey. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Colonial Oaks for John's care over the last few years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Marguerite Shinn; wife Carolyn; daughter Sue Ann Stanley; granddaughter, Jennifer Berry; great-granddaughter Emersyn Stanley; and sister Phyllis Knost.


Arrangements for John have been entrusted to Armes-Hunt Life Celebrations Funeral Home and Cremation Services College Park Chapel, 4601 South Western Avenue, Marion, Indiana 46953. A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Swayzee Community Church 101 West Madison Street Swayzee, Indiana 46986. A funeral service celebrating John's life will be Friday, January 5, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Jenni DeBaun officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Swayzee Community Church for the Helping Hands. Online memories and condolences may be shared at www.armeshuntfuneralhome.com.
