John K. Heavilin

Rev. John K. Heavilin, 93, passed away at 8:00 a.m., Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Rolling Meadows Health and Rehab in LaFontaine, Indiana. He was born at home in Marion, Indiana, on February 7, 1929, number 9 of 15 children born to McClellan and Vera Heavilin. He was a ministerial student at Indiana Wesleyan University (Marion College), and married a classmate, Beulah Butcher, in 1952. They lived in her home state of Wisconsin from 1952 until 1977 while he pastored at Gull Lake, Spooner, Hayward, and Wisconsin Rapids. He also served as the District Superintendent from 1970 to 1977. In the summer of 1977, he accepted a position with Indiana Wesleyan University serving in teaching and administrative capacities until his full retirement in 1997. He was an active member of College Wesleyan Church, serving on the board, ushering, visiting shut-ins, caring for widows, and teaching Sunday School until he was almost 90. He lovingly cared for his wife who became severely crippled with RA long before her death in 2008. He had begun to volunteer for a local elementary school even before she passed; after her death, he also began volunteering in the Marion Hospital ER. He remained active there until the fall of 2019. He lived his life verse: "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness." Matthew 6:33. He is survived by his two daughters, Keetha (Greg) Broyles of Hayward, Wisconsin, and Pam (Joe) Holloway of Naples, Florida; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Lois Drown and Charles Heavilin. A life celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July, 31, 2022, at College Wesleyan Church, 200 E. 38th Street, Marion. Arrangements have been entrusted to the College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 4601 South Western Avenue, Marion, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to College Wesleyan Church or to The John and Beulah Heavilin Scholarship Fund at Indiana Wesleyan University.
