Jodie Cain

Jodie J. Cain, 81, of Upland, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday morning, December 31, 2024, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana.

She was born in Blackford County on March 27, 1943, to Warren and Mabel Fergus. Jodie married F. Jay Cain on February 22, 1963. They had three children together: Kim, Angie, and Jayson.

Jodie graduated from Jefferson High School class of 1961 and International Business College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, on March 15, 1963. She earned a private secretarial certificate and later became a secretary to Leland E. Boren after the Boren family moved Pierce Governor to Upland. Jodie also worked for more than 30 years in various offices of Grant County. Her favorite position was in Circuit Court working 20 years for The Honorable Thomas Hunt.

After retirement she fully embraced the status of "Grandmother/LeeLee/Granny," and she was the cream of the crop. She supported all her grandchildren in every aspect of their lives including attending spelling bees, piano recitals, art exhibits, sporting events, school activities, birthdays, swimming parties, etc. This last summer even though her rheumatoid arthritis was debilitating, she still sat in the outfield in the car with Grandpa to watch her great-granddaughter Jentry play softball.

Jodie was respected as a strong and resilient woman who conquered breast cancer twice. But nothing can prepare a mother for the loss of a child, and when her cherished daughter, Kim, passed away in July of 2022, a part of Jodie was lost.

She is survived by her husband of almost 62 years, Jay; children, Angie Darlington (Dick) of Upland and Jayson Cain of Bradenton, Florida; sister, Lynne (Fergus) Perfetti of Westfield; brother, Jim Fergus (Becky) of Peachtree City, Georgia; son-in-law, Steve Denton of Upland; grandchildren, Kayla Smith (Brandon) of Klondike, Texas, Kelly Helvie (Cameron) of Upland, Marci Mullaney (Kevin) of Yorktown, and Molly Taylor of Fishers; great grandchildren, Jentry and Lyla Helvie and Ellie and Teddy Mullaney; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews.

Her family has lost a very bright, spirited member of their family, but will live with all the love and sass(iness) she left behind. Especially, her grandchildren loved their Granny's bluntness, the blankets she made for them, her special homemade noodles, yeast rolls, and chocolate sheet cake as well as her ability to laugh at all their jokes, even on bad days.
