Gene L. Hainen, 83, passed away at Marion Health on Sunday, October 2, 2022. Gene was born on September 13, 1939, to the late Albert and Virginia Hainen. He graduated from Findlay High School and then went to Bowling Green State University, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. While there, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. On July 1, 1961, Gene married Julia Southard, and she survives. After college, Gene went to work for Marathon Oil Company where he was voted Salesman of the Year his first year. After 12 years with Marathon, Gene and his family moved to Upland where he began working at Avis Industrial Corporation. Gene worked at Avis for 30 years and became president of the company. Gene retired from Avis in 2001. Gene was also the former President of the Grant County Economic Growth Council. He faithfully attended Upland Community Church, which he loved. He was a member of the gospel group, Men of Mercy, and he sang in church choirs for over 50 years. Gene always enjoyed being a part of ROMEOs - Retired Old Men Eating Out - and their Tuesday lunches.
Gene is survived by his wife of 61 years, Julia; children, Clark (Debbie) Hainen and Michelle (Mark) Price, both of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Braden(Jessica)and Lauren Hainen, Greenwood, Julia Price, Muncie, and Mitchell and Avery Price, Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Bryson and Bennett Hainen, Greenwood; and brother, Jerry (Jan) Hainen, Findlay, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Virginia.
A celebration of life will be held on November 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at Upland Community Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 259 North Main Street, Upland, Indiana 46989.
