Gary Robert Haynes, 73, died Sunday, June 24, 2018, at his Fairmount residence. Gary was born in Marion, Indiana, to the late Carl D. and Lois (Overmyer) Haynes on January 7, 1945. He married Shirley (Ragsdale) Haynes on April 10, 1984. She survives. Gary was a former Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1964- 1971. He served the Columbus, Ohio Police Department as Police Officer from 1973-1979 and was a Jonesboro reserve Police Office. Gary retired on April 1, 1998, with 22 years of Federal Service that included his military service. Gary served as a VA Police officer, detective, and Chief of Police at two VA Medical Centers. He served three years as a criminal investigator/Inspector of Field Operations at the VA Central Office in Washington D.C. Gary was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Masonic Lodge, and a former member of the American Legion Post 95. Also surviving are 4 children, Shawn Haynes, Carl Doug Haynes, Ty (Beth) Powell, and Tess (Rick) Miller; 16 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lois Haynes, and brother, Steve Haynes. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Fairmount Chapel ofArmes-HuntFuneral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana, where a visitation will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at noon. Burial will be held at a later date at Marion National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
