Matthews: Heaven welcomed a loyal servant of God when Doyte E. Kibbey, 101, arrived Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2016, from Marion General Hospital, Marion. Doyte was born in Jefferson Township, the son of the late Osmer and Sarah (Throckmorton) Kibbey. He was a 1933 graduate of Matthews High School. On January 1, 1937, Doyte married his high school sweetheart, Mary A. Kibbey, in Willow Branch, Indiana. They were married for 79 years, before she preceded him in death on January 15, 2016. Mr. Kibbey, who was a life-long resident of Matthews, was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, Matthews, where he had served in many capacities, including, Pastor Parish Committee, Administrative Council, a trustee, choir member, former Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Teacher for many years. He was the manager of the Matthews Feed Grain for 42 years. He was a member of the Matthews Lions Club for more than 40 years, serving as the Treasurer for 16 of those years, and was honored with the Melvin Jones Award in 1995. He was the caretaker of the Matthews Gym for many years, and also mixed the malt for the Lions Club Frosted Malt Wagon and sorted eye glasses for recycling, from his home for many years. He was on the Matthews Volunteer Fire Department for 31 years. Doyte was also a charter trustee of the Matthews Cemetery Association for over 40 years and had served as a trustee on the Advisory Board of Jefferson Township from 1994-1998. Doyte was a numismatist and enjoyed watching the Indiana Pacers and Indianapolis Colts play. Until a few years ago, he could still be seen riding his bicycle around town. Survivors include a son, Richard (Kay) Kibbey, Marion; two daughters, Becky (Bill) Swathwood, Matthews, and Ruth Ann (James) Botkin, Marion; special nephew, James P. (LaRea) Slater, Matthews; seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Kibbey and Paul Kibbey, two sisters, Eva Sellers and Mary Sjodhol, and a grandson, Troy Swathwood.
