Donald K. Walz

Donald K. "Don" Walz, 87, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021, in Marion General Hospital. He was born in Winslow, Arizona on February 1, 1933, the son of the late Ferdinand and Kathryn (Stephens) Walz. Don graduated from Jefferson Township High School in 1951. On June 16, 1952, he married the love of his life, Mary Williams. Together they shared 65 years, before she preceded him in death on July 14, 2017. Mr. Walz served in the United States Marine Corp from 1952-1954. He was a hard-working man who had worked at the Letukas Foundry, Upland, for five years, owned a painting business for 12 years, and worked at General Motors for over 30 years. After retiring from General Motors, he and Mary moved to Silver City, New Mexico where they owned and operated a restaurant, The Grinder Mill, for fifteen years before returning to Indiana in 1995. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Gas City and the American Legion Post 138, Upland, for over 60 years, where he'd served as Commander from 1995-2016. He enjoyed gardening, watching Western movies and sports, especially IU Basketball. In their younger years, he and Mary enjoyed square dancing and round dancing whenever they could and were members of several dance clubs in both Indiana and New Mexico. Survivors include his children: Ginny Rice, Upland; and Connie Doublin, Upland; and Michael (Kathy) Walz, Colorado; three grandchildren: Katrina (Johnny) Weaver, Upland; Kregg (Jennifer) McGriff, Upland; and Kristi (Scott) Waschitz, Webster, New York; six great-grandchildren: Brittany (Skyler) Boruff; Rachelle Smith; Michael Smith; Kamron McGriff; Timothy Waschitz; and Karlee McGriff; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Bentley. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers: Frederick and Jack Walz; daughter: Teresa "Terri" Walz; grandson: James "Jimmy" Doublin; and son-in-law: Timothy Rice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 259 N. Main St., Upland, Indiana, where a visitation will be held from Noon-2pm, Monday, January 18, 2021. The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Jefferson Cemetery, Upland. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, please wear a mask when attending the services.
