Darlene S. Shindler

Darlene S. (Gerstorff) Shindler, 82, died Sunday, October 23, 2022, at her Summitville residence after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. Darlene was born on June 16, 1940, in Fairmount, Indiana, daughter of the late James W. and Mary (Jones) Gerstorff. She attended Marion High School. Darlene and Hugh Shindler, Jr. were married on July 21, 1956. He preceded her in death in 2001. She worked as a bookkeeper at AA Rents for 35 years, and also worked as an aide for Park Elementary School. She was a member of Fairmount Friends Church and you would find her faithfully, every Sunday, on the second row. At Fairmount Friends, she was a member of the Rockers Life Group. She enjoyed playing piano, solving puzzle books, watching the Game Show Network, and going out to eat weekly with the retired ladies from Park Elementary, but most importantly, she loved spending time with her family.

Darlene is survived by two children, Teresa (Ron) Riggs, Summitville, and Hugh Jay Shindler, Muncie; four grandchildren, Cody Riggs, Cady (Drew) Gross, and Jared and Josiah Shindler; two great-grandchildren, Drew and Cora Gross; siblings, Judith Rhodes, Wendell Gerstorff, and Margaret Moore all of Fairmount, and Betty Meritt, Illinois; and sister-in-law, Charline Gerstorff, Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary; husband, Hugh; brothers, James, Marion, William, Carl "Ed", John, and George Gerstorff; and sister, Stella Ricker.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 South Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana, where visitation will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow with Pastor Andrew Heald officiating. Burial will take place at Park Cemetery.
