Art Hanes

December 5, 1943 — October 30, 2023

Arthur Scott Hanes, 79, died October 30, 2023, at home with his wife and son by his

side after a short battle with heart failure. He had lived on the family farm his entire life,

moving from his parents' house to what had been his Grandparents' house where he

lived with his wife for the last 59 years. He was born December 5, 1943, to Donald and

Miriam (Scott) Hanes. On August 1, 1964, he married his high school sweetheart,

Janice Eileen Wysong. They were parents to three sons: Scott, Douglas, and Michael.

Mr. Hanes was a 1961 graduate of Fairmount High School and attended the Purdue

Agricultural Short Course the following year. He had been an active farmer his entire

working career. He had served on the Liberty Township Advisory Board, was a former

member of the Grant County Beef Association, and was on the holding corporation for

the Madison-Grant Junior High School. He was a member of the Citizens Exchange

Bank board at the time of its closing. Mr. Hanes was a longtime member of Bethel

Friends Church where he had served on Ministry and Oversight Committee, the

Trustees committee, and as treasurer of the church.

Art loved farming, watching his grandkids play sports, and being able to know his great

grandchildren. He was a man of his word and a proud American. He will be greatly

missed.

Mr. Hanes is survived by his wife Janice; sons, Douglas (Nandini), Portland, OR and

Michael, Fairmount, IN; Grandchildren, Emily (Jackson) Branson, Muncie, and their

children Nolan and Lydia; John (Megan) Hanes and their children, Hadley and Harper

(due in November); sister, Barbara (Sheldon) Gregg, Albany, IN; brothers, Carl Hanes,

Fairmount, and Ralph (Fran) Hanes, Fayetteville, GA; daughter-in-law, Marla (Andy)

Brewer; sister-in-law, Jade Wysong, North Reading, MA; brother-in-law, Gordon Gough,

Fairmount, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Scott (2013), and sisters-in-law, Peg

Hanes and Janet Gough, and brother-in-law, Jere Wysong.
