Albert E. Lawvere

November 17, 1944 — April 26, 2021

Matthews - Albert E. Lawvere was born on a beautiful day, November 17, 1944, and passed away peacefully on April 26, 2021, surrounded by his family. Albert graduated from Jefferson Township High School, Upland, in 1962, where he was Vice President of his senior class. While in school, he participated in elementary basketball, high school track, FFA, and the senior play cast. While still in high school, he participated in Golden Gloves in Muncie. He continued his education at Indiana University, Bloomington, graduating in 1966. During the summer of 1967, he worked on his masters at the University of Chicago and later some courses in Kokomo. In the summer of 1969, he returned to Bloomington to earn a Masters of Teaching Arts Degree in Math. Albert's teaching career began in Gas City teaching Social Studies for 6th Grade. Then, for over 30 years, he taught Math at McCulloch Junior High, Marion Community Schools, retiring in 2000. During that time, leadership in the Marion Teachers' Association was significant. Hobbies and interests included membership in a Model A Club (he owned a beautiful red 1929 Model A Ford), membership in a German Club, membership in the Academy of Model Aeronautics, Muncie, and playing cards with friends. In 1967, Albert married Gabriele Bott Baugher, celebrating 54 years this April. Their greatest joy, besides family, was travel, celebrating nature, including the study of birds (example: Sandhill Cranes in Jasper County) and visiting parks and nature preserves. Florida was enjoyable, but a very celebrated trip was to Alaska, where they observed grizzly bears and swans. (While in Alaska, they hit a moose!) Also, Lake Louise in Canada became a return destination that resonated as a spiritual high for them. Trips to Germany were also treasured by both of them. Since the Lawveres lived on the Mississinewa River, that was a close-by nature study. One memorable trip was down the river on their pontoon. A Matthews friend spotted them on the river, "It's the Lawveres! Wouldn't you know it?!" Upon retirement, he continued working on building and remodeling houses. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Francis W. and Delight (Moorman) Lawvere; in-laws, Anna and Carl Baugher; nephew, Nevin Lawvere; sister-in-law, Madeline Bott; brother-in-law, Max Baugher; special cousin, Mike Williams; and special uncle, Ted Lawvere.
