Doris E. Rupel

August 25, 1935 — March 13, 2022

Doris E. Rupel, 86, of Upland, entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 13th after a 3-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She remained optimistic throughout and continuously said "Tomorrow will be a better day.". She did not lose the battle; she ultimately won her heavenly reward. Doris was born on August 25, 1935, to Ralph and Lesta (Smith) Detamore and was raised on the family farm in Huntington County. She graduated from Jefferson Township High School in Huntington County in 1953. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Joseph B. Rupel, on June 7, 1953. They started their family in Huntington County, and eventually moved to Grant County in 1964, and in 1975 made Upland their home. Doris and Joe began real estate careers with King Family Real Estate and later opened their own company, Rupel Realty. Doris joined Joe when he began Rupel Tax Service, working side-by-side throughout. The two of them together joined All-American Home Builders and founded Rupel Builders in 1979. Whatever they were doing, at home or at work, they did it together, until Joe's passing in 2002. Doris cherished time with her family. She enjoyed spending time attending her children's events when they were young, and later her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting events, dance recitals, band concerts, and school programs. Another one of her great passions was working in her flower gardens. She took great pride in her yard, and it showed, working tirelessly to perfection. She was a member of the Jefferson Center United Methodist Church for many years, growing up in the church, married Joe there in 1953, and made numerous lifelong friends in that quaint little church in the middle of the cornfields of Huntington County. She more recently attended Pierce United Methodist Church in Upland. Jesus was always at the center of her life. Doris is survived by her daughters, Pam McClellan, Kokomo, IN; Sally (Dennis) Briner, Upland, IN; Shelly Rupel, Phoenix, AZ. Surviving grandchildren are Ryan (Jodi) Brodkorb, Jeremiah Rupel, Lindsay (Micah) Vandiver, Shannon (Matt) McCollom, and Lance McClellan. Doris was fondly known as GG to Paisley, Renzo, Kenlee, Bristol, Trey, Alex, Lainey, Brody, Briley and Kaelyn. Doris is also survived by her sister, Barbara Hart; brother, Roger (Margaret) Detamore; and sister-in-law, Margery Rupel. Besides her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by a son, Stan, and a brother-in-law, Dean Hart. Services will be held at the Jones-Smith Chapel at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home. 259 N. Main Street in Upland on Thursday, March 17th, with visitation from 12-2 pm and the funeral service beginning at 2 pm, with Chaplain Ginny Soultz and Rev. Howard Clayton officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Huntington County. Livestreaming will be available. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Stillwater Hospice, formerly Visiting Nurse, 5910 Homestead Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46814, in appreciation for the kind and wonderful care provided to Doris.
